Litter-Robot 4: LitterHopper™ Troubleshooting Guide

IMPORTANT
  1. Make sure your unit is plugged in.

  2. Do not use a backup battery while using the LitterHopper; LitterHopper will not dispense litter if the backup battery is installed.

  3. Make sure your unit is connected to WiFi and online.

  4. Make sure your firmware is up-to-date. If the app does not give you the option to update, then you have the latest version.

About LitterHopper errors

The LitterHopper is designed to automatically dispense litter at the start of the next cycle if the laser sensor detects that litter needs to be added. LitterHopper errors are only detected when the LitterHopper motor rotates under specific conditions.

Gif of blue and purple alternating light bar.

If the Litter-Robot 4 light bar is alternating blue and purple, this indicates an error with the LitterHopper motor. You will also receive a notification on your phone if you use the Whisker app. LitterHopper errors, from most common error associated to least common, include:

  • Motor Fault Disconnected – indicates that the LitterHopper is not properly seated.

  • Motor Fault /OT Amps (Motor Jammed) – indicates a motor over-torque, likely due to an object jammed in the dispensing area.

  • Motor Fault Short – indicates there is likely an issue with the LitterHopper motor.

If you are experiencing this issue, please follow the Litter-Robot 4: LitterHopper™ error with alternating blue and purple light bar troubleshooting guide.

LitterHopper not dispensing

The LitterHopper is designed to automatically maintain the optimal litter bed level within the globe of your Litter-Robot 4. The 'default' optimal litter bed level is just below the MAX fill line inside the globe. Litter-Robot 4 uses sensors to measure the height of the litter bed level at the end of each clean cycle. If the sensors determine that the litter bed level is below the optimal level, then the LitterHopper will dispense litter into the globe during the NEXT clean cycle. When dispensing, the globe may momentarily pause rotation.

Steps to resolve this include the following:

  • Update your firmware.
  • Verify the LitterHopper motor is working (long-press the Power and Cycle buttons for 3 seconds).
  • Make sure the LitterHopper key is installed (globe plug is removed).
  • Clear the LitterHopper chute.
  • Calibrate the optimal litter level (refer to online calibration procedure in the troubleshooting link below).

If you are experiencing this issue, please follow the Litter-Robot 4: LitterHopper™ not dispensing troubleshooting guide.
